Which course should I take?
That depends heavily on your math goals and your most efficient learning style. Here is a comparison of the typical reasons why students choose a specific program along with the pros and cons. Other FAQ's deal with typical student situations. Click here to see Comparison Chart

How much do the programs cost?
The on-campus Math Center courses are 3 and 5 unit courses, so registration cost is either $60 or $100. The required textbook and supplement package for Math 35 is $133.35, the Math 95 textbook and package is $82.90, and the Math 96 book and package is $78.70.

The online self-paced courses (Math 95 or Math 96), are 5 unit courses, so registration cost is $100. No textbook is required, but an access code must be purchased. The access code is $69.95 if purchased online from Content On Demand or $80.00 if purchased from the bookstore.

The online Math 15 refresher courses are 1 unit, so the registration cost is $20. No textbook is required, but an access code must be purchased for the Aleks.com Web site. When purchased at the bookstore the cost for 7.6 weeks is $23.00. The cost for 14 weeks is $39.95. When purchased through www.aleks.com, the cost of the Aleks access code is $22 for 7.68 weeks and $38.75 for 14 weeks.

How can I transfer to a self-paced course before the withdrawal deadline
If you want to transfer to a self-paced course, don’t drop your current class. Once you obtain the add code and transfer petition for the new course, you have it signed by the professor, then take it to the Records office in A-109 where they will drop you from your previous course and add the self-paced course at the same time. The Records office will transfer your course fee so that you don’t have to pay twice for the course. If the transfer is completed after the drop deadline, you will receive a W, but it is a “soft’” W (part of a transfer), and it will not affect your academic record.

What course should I take if I need Math 119 or other 100 level math course to transfer, but not Math 95 or Math 96?
Enroll in and receive a credit grade for Math 15C (algebra/geometry). Then ask Professor Kater or the current Math 15 instructor to prepare a departmental final Math 96 exam. If you score 70% or better on the math exam, the instructor will complete a faculty initiated petition to waive the prerequisite. You select the 100 level course in which you would like to enroll and the petition enables you to enroll in the course.

What course should I take if I need Math 119 or other 100 level math course to transfer and I also need Math 95 or Math 96 for an AA degree or other reason.
If you need Math 95 or Math 96 for a specific reason such as an AA degree, then you must take that class. A Math 15 is not a substitute. However, you can use a Math 15 course along with a departmental to bypass courses that you need along the way to the required course. For example, if you need Math 96, but not necessarily Math 95, you can earn a credit grade for Math 15B and pass the Math 95 final exam with 70%, in order to bypass Math 95, then take Math 96. You will not receive credit for any class that is bypassed.

What can I do if I'm blocked from registering because of a repetition violation?
If you are blocked from retaking Math 95, for example, you may enroll in and earn a credit grade for Math 15A and then go to the Evaluations Department in A110 to remove the registration block and you will be abLe to enroll in Math 95. If you are blocked from retaking Math 96, you may enroll in and earn a credit grade for Math 15B, then go to the Evaluations Department in A110 to remove the registration block and you will be able to enroll in Math 96.

How do I challenge Math 35 and get into a Math 95 course?
Enroll in Math 15A, earn a credit grade, and pass the Math 35 departmental final exam with a 'C' (70%) or better. Then, Professor Kater or the current Math 15 instructor will complete a faculty initiated challenge to get you into the Math 95 course of your choice.

How do I challenge Math 95 and get into a Math 96 course?
Enroll in Math 15B, earn a credit grade, and pass the Math 95 final with a 'C' (70%) or better. Then, Professor Kater or the current Math 15 instructor will complete a faculty initiated challenge to get you into the Math 96 course of your choice.

What's the difference between the on-campus self-paced courses and the online self-paced courses?
The similarities include the schedule. They are both open-entry, open-exit, and self-paced. Both are 5 units and require a minimum of 5 hours per week attendance. Final exams for both are given on-campus in the Math Center. The similarities end there. The on-campus courses require the purchase of a specific textbook package; the online courses require the purchase of an access's code. The orientation for the on-campus courses is on campus; the orientation for the online courses in the online Web CT course followed by a required quiz. The on-campus students study Tuesday through Saturday in the Math Center or using their book bundle supplements at home; The online students have 24/7 access online and may use the Math Center resources as well.

FAQs for On-campus Self paced math Course Math 35,95,96

How do I add a class in the Math Center?
How do I take a test in the Math Center?
What text and materials are required for a Math Center course?
What is the Math Center?
How do I add a class in the Math Center?
You can not register for a Math Center course without an add code, even before the course starts. You need to attend an on-campus orientation to determine if the course is right for you. Go to the Registration page under Quick Links on this Web site for complete registration information.

How do I take a test in the Math Center?
Since the Math Center courses are self paced, you take a test when you are ready. Most tests are taken using the computer, although paper tests are available. When taking a test using the computer, a student should sign in at the testing station. For each chapter, you take a pretest that doesn't count toward your grade. When you pass it with 70% or better, you can take the chapter test. When you pas that test, you move on the the next chapter. Tests are 20 questions each, and the time allowed ranges from 50 minutes to 70 minutes depending on the class. The testing software has a built in calculator for use during the test.

What text and materials are required for a Math Center course?
The textbook and supplements package used in the Math Center is different from the book used in the lecture classes. Each student is required to buy a new textbook bundle (See the Student Handbook for specific text information) from the bookstore or KB Books.

What is the Math Center?
The Math Center provides Math 35, 95, and 96 courses in a self-paced, open-entry, open-exit format. Students registered for other math courses can also obtain walk-in tutoring in the Math Center. The Math Center is located in T-208. During the fall and the spring semesters, the Math Center is open: Tuesday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The reduced schedule for the summer session is posted on the Web site.

FAQs for Refresher Math 15 A B ,C & E

What is Math 15?
Challenging a Prerequisite?
How to Enroll in Math 15?
Learning Resources?

What is Math 15?
Math 15 courses are ideally suited for students who have not taken math for a long time and want to refresh their skills in order to be successful in other courses. Math 15 courses offer students a 1-unit, credit/no-credit way to refresh their math skills without the commitment, cost and academic risk a full course would entail. However, they can also be used when students are blocked from re-taking a course or to waive a prerequisite. Math 15 courses are open-entry, self-paced and fully online. Also, Math 15 courses require no pre-requisite, can be taken alongside other math classes and can be re-taken an unlimited amount of times.

Challenging a Prerequisite?
A student may challenge a pre-requisite by finishing 90% of the course goal material and passing a Math Center final exam with a grade of 70% or higher. For Math 15B and Math 15C, students must also pass the corresponding Geometry components of the courses with 90% in order to challenge a pre-requisite. However, students should be wary that the higher-level Math 15 courses (B, C and E) are very challenging. Not many students finish Math 15B and even fewer finish Math 15C. Although they are only 1-unit classes, students should expect to spend time equivalent to a 5-unit class in order to finish.

Learning Resources?
Math 15 courses are completely online and all instruction takes place online in the service offered by the Aleks website (www.aleks.com). There is no book to buy and access codes are as little as $21, depending on the duration of the license. The online math software is highly sophisticated, adapting to individual student strengths and weaknesses. It can be demanding at times, presenting the next level of topics only once assured the student understands the basic material. In addition, a student is free to use the resources available in the Math Center, including computers for Internet access and tutoring.
